Maternity Skin Care

There are a lot of things to consider while pregnant and one of them is how to care for your skin during this period of time. Your body is going to change and the increase in hormones can cause problems with your skin that you never had before. So what do you do?

First be aware of what to avoid

Most women are aware that you need to avoid consuming certain things while pregnant because everything you take into your body affects the child growing inside. However you also need to consider what you put on to your body. The skin absorbs these ingredients into your bloodstream which will in turn affect your baby. Check out the ingredients of any skin care product you chose to use. You should avoid anything which contain salicylic acid or any of the retinoids (Retinol, Retin-A, etc.).

Salicylic acid can be found in cleansers and toners, a mild acid which gets into the pores and cleans out dead skin. However high doses of this acid have been shown to cause birth defects and while small amounts would probably be harmless, it is easy enough to avoid all together.

Retinoids are usually found in anti aging moisturizers to help reduce wrinkles and improve skin tone. It is a type of Vitamin A which has been proven in high doses to be harmful to an unborn child. When used topically there is no conclusive evidence to support it causing issues however since there are a multitude of products in the market to use there is no harm in being extra cautious to avoid this ingredient.

Next identify the problem

Since your body is now changing your skin will probably be different then it was before. Many women experience breakouts of acne, dry itchy skin, or maybe the opposite your skin can become oily. Bottom line is you should identify what your skin is like now that you are pregnant and decide from there how to approach your skin care.

Acne or Oily skin

  • Try sulphur based topical products or ones that contain glycolic acid or alpha hydroxy acids.
  • Use a mild cleanser daily to help remove excess oil
  • Switch foundations to one specially made for oily skin
  • Use loose powder mineral make-up
  • Dab your face with blotting papers during the day to help remove excess oil
  • Consult your healthcare provider if you feel you need something more aggressive

Dry Skin

  • Use mild cleansers and keep skin moisturized avoiding hot showers that can further dry out your skin.

Skin Discoloration

  • Be sure to wear a safe sunscreen and limit your time in the sun
  • Most discolorations will fade after delivery so use concealers in the mean time

Stretch Marks

  • Keep your skin moisturized and try to use topical treatments which are proven safe and effective in preventing stretch marks like Elastin3.

Varicose Veins

  • Increase blood flow to your legs by moving
  • Do not remain standing still for prolonged periods of time
  • While resting elevate your legs
  • Use a soothing and restorative product like Variclear
